A Chequer-Board of Nights and Days

In Praise Of Labor Unions

Not. I occasionally kick around ideas about what type of organization might help make for a better bargaining vehicle for workers while at the same time refraining from offending the intelligence and sensibilities of anyone who knows anything about smart labor and economic policies and the incapacity of labor unions to incorporate either into their operations. I won't pretend to be close to coming up with the specifics of what might make up this hypothetical alternative organization--some kind of board composed of both worker representatives and management, presided over by some kind of neutral ombudsperson might be the best alternative, but I reserve the right to revise and extend my remarks on this issue--but it is increasingly clear that labor unions are an idea that Time has passed by.

Now, if only someone would let the Obama Administration in on that little secret.
