Ask What Your Inauguration Speech Can Do For You

We at the Arena were asked what we would like to hear in the soon-to-be President's Inaugural Address and whether President Bush ought to receive a few words of gratitude. My thoughts are here.

Predictably, there are a number of contributors who believe that no words of gratitude whatsoever should be offered to the outgoing President of the United States--recent traditions and expectations of courtesy and etiquette notwithstanding. I presume these are the same people who have complained over the past eight years about a hyperpartisan tone and about how we have been divided rather than united.

Harlan Ellison famously said that the two most common elements in the universe were hydrogen and stupidity. He forgot to mention hypocrisy.
