Robert Fagles, RIP

Posted by Pejman Yousefzadeh on Sun Mar 30, 2008 at 08:20:34 PM EST

His loss will be keenly felt in the classical community. If you haven't had a chance to read a Fagles translation, I recommend that you do so quickly. Sophocles's Three Theban Plays is very well translated and, of course, all of the praise for Fagles's translation of The Aeneid is completely and entirely well-deserved. Fagles provides us with our quote for the day: "My feeling is that if something is timeless, then it will also be timely." Quite so.
