A Chequer-Board of Nights and Days

Round One To The Governor

It was thought that Louisiana's political culture, with its lack of ethics, honesty and transparency was beyond redemption, but Governor Bobby Jindal has forced the Louisiana political establishment to accept a tough and comprehensive set of reforms in the ethics department. The story is here.

This is a huge win for Governor Jindal and should augment his political power as he seeks to make other reforms in the state. One win tends to build on another in politics and the Governor has laid the foundation for future policy and political successes during his term.

To be sure, all of this will be good for Bobby Jindal as he pursues his political career. But even better is the fact that all of this will be good for Louisiana. The state needed a miracle to get itself out of its morass. It may have found that miracle in its new Governor.

He'll need it.  From three years in New Orleans, I know some of Louisiana's depths of corruption first hand, though I hesitate to imagine it only scratches the surface.  If Bobby Jindal can clean it up, saying he deserves to be President will be an understatement: he'll deserve an Oscar, a Grammy, the Medal of Honor, the Order of the Garter and the Nobel Peace Prize all rolled into one.
