Stimulus We Can Believe In

James Bacchus reminds Democrats that if they really want to stimulate the economy, they should pay attention to promoting trade liberalization.
This advice will fall on deaf ears, it would seem. Democrats aren't exactly high on free trade, for reasons that have been discussed at length and have to do with a combination of the political attractions of economic populism and nationalism and some plain, old-fashioned ignorance.
But if the advice does fall on deaf ears--and the economy suffers as a consequence--at the very least, there will be a clear and salient case to take to the electorate pointing out that Democrats had a chance to put successful economic policies into effect . . . and flubbed that chance.
Not the best of silver linings, but I'll take what I can get.
