Behold The Bear

Power is being consolidated in Russia, with the presidential term being extended from four years to six. And perhaps, all of this is just in time for Vladimir Putin to make his return as president of Russia--with the presidency regaining the powers it had under Putin, of course (much of those powers now reside with the prime minister who--guess what!--is Putin).

You know, now would be a great time to have a Secretary of State who commands respect because of a command of substance, instead of a Secretary of State who is cooed over merely because of a command of starpower.

Just sayin'.

Russia and the future (none / 0) (#1)

Russia is a scary Bear when viewed with a strong helping of Cold War memory and $150/b oil  With oil falling to a more sustainable 60-80 range and, importantly, a population reduced to 145 million (shrinking by about 500,000/year), they have fantastic weaknesses.

So, sure, the re-emergence of a hostile Russia is a bad thing. But limited.
