If there is anything to be learned from this, it is that however much we seek to put such thoughts out of our minds, there are guilty people about and they seek to kill the innocent. Banal words, to be sure, but they have the virtue of being blunt. Call the current struggle whatever you wish; a war, a kerfuffle, a great endeavor, a battle, a dispute . . . whatever. Just do not let the essentials of this new normal not be forgotten and do not be surprised or appalled when the innocent take measures to defend themselves.
And yes, let those measures be calibrated. And yes, let those measures be proportionate, if necessary. Above all else, let them be effective. For in the end, efficacy in countering terrorism is what matters most. UPDATE: Just when you thought that people might get serious, at least for a while, along comes this. Apparently, we are led to believe that the reason there is a Code Red emergency is not because a number of planes might have been blown up in the skies causing "considerable loss of life" (the understatement of the year, perhaps). Rather, it is because--wait for it!--a Republican President wanted to hide the fact that a sometimes sympathetic Democratic Senator lost a primary. Just let that degree of
