Rob Portman: OMB Director

I am pretty much of the same mind as this post. Rob Portman is a great and good guy and someone who would be a very good OMB Director--not to mention a whole lot of other things. But his talents would be better used if he remained the U.S. Trade Representative and if the Administration went out and got a different person to play the role of fiscal hawk (and how we do pray that the OMB Director will now play the role of fiscal hawk). As Dan Drezner points out, Portman's move to OMB might well augur badly for the Doha trade talks.

This is no slam against Portman. He is an excellent public sevant and I hope that he is destined for tremendous things. Taken by himself, he would probably make an excellent OMB Director. But there are other things that he could be doing as well . . . like his current job, where he enjoys a wide degree of acclaim and from which it is a shame to pull him.
