A Chequer-Board of Nights and Days

Baylor Balks at Beckwith

Francis Beckwith, the prominent and massively prolific Christian philosopher and associate director of the J. M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies at Baylor University, has been denied tenure. I don't claim to have kept up with the Avignon-esque intrigues that have rocked Baylor for the past several years, but from the perspective of a casual observer it seems hard to avoid the conclusion that Beckwith's denial is, well, not quite motivated by academic considerations. You'd think a major Baptist university could find a place at the table for someone of Beckwith's theological and political views, especially given his outstanding calibre and accomplishment. Expect a storm of controversy.
