There is nothing--nothing--to this issue over the port deal other than bad political management. Bad political management may have become endemic for the Bush Administration as of late, but that is not by itself a justification for condemning the port deal. The Coast Guard remains in charge of port security, and the objections to the port deal basically amount to saying that no Arab companies need apply for work regarding port operations, even if said companies are based in countries that are friendly to the United States. This would, of course be a silly policy.

Basically, this entire brouhaha was started thanks to the desire of Democrats to outflank the Administration on security, and the desire of Republicans not to be outflanked by Democrats. This may have resulted in a perfect political storm, and one can certainly make the argument that the politics of this issue could have been handled better. But substantively, this is a mountain that once was and once again should be a molehill. We have better and more important things to discuss than this.
