A Chequer-Board of Nights and Days

The Shooting

I haven't written anything about the Cheney hunting accident because other than saying that it was idiotic not to disclose the matter to the press sooner (press relations may not have been paramount for the Vice President at the time of the shooting but they should have been for someone) and that I hope that Mr. Whittington makes a swift and full recovery, there really is not that much to say.

But of course, others are finding plenty to say--connecting the accident with the search for WMD's the budgetary process, and perhaps even some glitch at the most recent G8 Summit. And now, as we see, the smears are running fast and furious.

There are some times I regret ever having taken up blogging because bloggers get sucked into either (a) debates that are bizarre and foolish from the outset or (b) debates that are legitimate but swiftly turn bizarre and foolish. This is one of the latter situations. And this is nothing short of lunacy; there is nothing "enjoyable" about this situation at all unless you are some kind of sadist who enjoys seeing the public's attention diverted from serious policy issues to procedural train wrecks with all of the substance of a rubbernecking attraction. If Cheney screwed up, he should pay the consequences. But who in their right mind actually "enjoys" this?
