So Much For An Alito FilibusterPosted by Pejman Yousefzadeh on Sun Jan 15, 2006 at 04:45:49 PM EST
As reported here, Senator Dianne Feinstein--herself an Alito opponent--is against the idea of a filibuster. I imagine that there are many more Democratic Senators who feel the same way, and barring a major bombshell, Judge Alito will be Justice Alito quite soon.
This, by the way, is the way that the process is supposed to work. It is perfectly fine for Senators to vote their consciences but the vote should take place and it should be a free one. So long as there is no concern about a nominee's qualifications or ethics, the rule should be that a President is entitled to his/her nominations going to the floor for a vote with Senators having the ability to vote their consciences. I realize this means that my side of the ideological divide may be unhappy at times, but if we want to prevent that, we need to work hard to win elections. And as I understand it, that is what being politically active in a democratic republic entails anyway.
