Why is Arlen Specter urging a delay in naming Justice O'Connor's successor? Why is he talking to Justice O'Connor about staying on the Court? Since when is it Senator Specter's business to tell Justices how long they should stay on the Court? It would be inappropriate for the President to do that--why can Specter? Since when is it appropriate at all to tell someone who wants to retire to take care of her Alzheimer's Disease-suffering husband that she ought to put such plans off? And what is the point of using the performance of John Roberts to determine who the next nominee will be? We didn't do this when William Rehnquist was elevated to Chief Justice and when Antonin Scalia took his place. Why are we doing it now?
This is silly beyond measure. A whole host of ridiculous problems would be avoided if people just minded their own business. Arlen Specter might want to take note of that lesson.
