The "Shinseki Was Fired For Calling For More Troops" Myth

It gets play again at the interestingly-named Reality-Based Community blog:

. . . the "sober judgment" of Gen. Eric Shinseki was that we needed more troops, and he was fired for his sobriety.

From CNN

[Senior Pentagon Correspondent Jamie] MCINTYRE: Now, Secretary Rumsfeld is fond of saying that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not their own set of facts. And the fact that the Army chief of staff was not fired or forced to retire early is just that, Judy. It is a fact.

This is from over a year ago. You would think the myth that General Shinseki was fired because of his comments on troop deployment in Iraq wouldn't get any traction anymore.

(Cross posted at Red State.)

UPDATE: An e-mail from Tacitus informs me that the above link notwithstanding, Shinseki's replacement was announced well ahead of time (a year in advance) in retaliation for his comments about force levels in Iraq. My understanding was that the replacement was announced before the comments about troop strength and I get that in part from the above link. If anyone has information to the contrary, please feel free to drop it in comments and if necessary, I will retract the post.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Maguire has much more.
