If it really is the case that
half of the Senate Republican caucus believes Harriet Miers is unworthy of nomination to the Supreme Court, then this nomination is in even worse trouble than I thought possible. It will impact the President's political strength negatively. It will continue to roil the Republican Party whether or not Miers is confirmed. And it will make it far more difficult in the future to nominate a Luttig or a McConnell--among others--as worthy Supreme Court Justices if the White House's judicial confirmation operation remains so badly out of tune.
I am of the increasing opinion that this nomination should be withdrawn so as to stop the bloodletting. I am trying to keep an open mind--as I have said before--regarding Ms. Miers's qualifications. But it is hard to do when the price appears to be so high.
